If you’ve ever done a LIKE campaign on your Facebook business profile, then LIKE farming has most likely infiltrated its way onto your page. While this used to be a welcome factor for businesses, it is now having negative effect on the Facebook ranking of your posts.
But why?
So we all know that the more people share, like, or comment on your Facebook posts, the more links you build in favour of your general SEO. But in order to get people to interact with your posts, you need followers—or LIKES.
So you do a LIKE campaign and get a few hundred people to LIKE your page. But soon, you discover that all these new LIKES are failing to interact with your posts.
The reason for this is that the profiles LIKING your page are fake Facebook profiles. They’re all just profiles that were created for the once-popular scheme called LIKE farming.
So what if these profiles are fake? Doesn’t it make us look good?
At this point, it’s important to recognize that these fake LIKES are actually damaging your Facebook presence. Here’s why:
Facebook has over 100 000 variables factored into its ranking algorithm. One of those variables has to do with the percentage of followers that are interacting with your posts. Because these profiles are NOT interacting with your posts—because these people don’t even exist—your interaction percentage will drop drastically. As a result, your REAL fans will likely not even get to see your posts, because Facebook deems you “unpopular”.
EEEEEEK! What can I do to fix this?
If you’ve made the mistake of obtaining fake LIKES through whatever method, you CAN fix it. However, bear in mind that getting those LIKES was a lot easier and quicker than it’ll be to get rid of them. Here’s how you can delete these profiles and start reversing the damage they’re done:
- Step 1: Identify which LIKES are from fake profiles. You will have to go through your Facebook fans and individually check each one to make sure they are real people. If a profile has two or three pictures, never comments on anything, and hasn’t interacted on Facebook in the last year, it’s probably a ‘fakey’.
- Step 2: When you find a fake fan, follow this procedure to delete and block that profile off your page.
- Step 3: Up the frequency of your posts by putting up original and engaging content for your real fans. Get this content written and conceptualized by a professional Facebook marketer if you have access to one.
- Step 4: Instead of doing a LIKE campaign, do an interaction campaign on your favourite posts. This means that the friends of your current fans will get notified of your posts and be encouraged to comment, LIKE, or share them (if they’re good).
It may feel like you’re starting from scratch, but this will ensure better popularity and stronger optimization for your business on the web.
Good luck!
